12K White Gold is made from a mixture of gold and silver, the appearance is a “soft” silver looking leaf that is excellent for use on verre eglomise glass gilding.
Silver Leaf is made from genuine silver and will tarnish without a clear coat, our primary use for silver leaf is in antiqued and aged finishes and creating aged silver mirrors on glass. Limited applications because of its propensity to tarnish.
22 Karat Moon Gold is 92% pure gold. Moon Gold has a unique color that is rich in tone and varies with different lights and settings.
Copper Leaf is made from pure copper, we use this almost exclusively for interior gilding and on verre eglomise pieces.
Aluminum Leaf is a Durable alternative to Silver Leaf, requires clear coat
Imitation Gold Leaf is an alternative to Genuine Gold Leaf, Made from brass and a combination of zinc and copper, sometimes referred to as Dutch Metal, Schlag or Composition Leaf. Wide variety of applications.

In most cases genuine gold leaf is the better choice because of its longevity and its rich appearance, although for certain interior applications like ceilings imitation leaf as well as copper and aluminum are good options.

When applied properly with the correct preparation, priming, size and gram weight, 23k to 24k gold leaf on exterior surfaces will typically have a minimum 30+ year life, it can be longer depending on exposure.

For exterior gilding our studio only uses 21g to 23g weight per 1,000 sheets for maximum durability and slow size to allow for expansion and contraction due to normal weather conditions.

Most leaf options require a clear coat to prevent tarnishing, oxidation and discoloration with the exception of 23k to 24k exterior applications that don’t come into contact with human hands.

24 karat gold is pure gold with no other metal added. 12 karat gold is 50% gold and 50% other metal. The karat weight of gold leaf ranges from 12 karat white gold to 24 karat. 23 karat to 24 karat are used for all exterior projects.
